How To Brief A Web Design Project

The five things a designer needs from you before a single pixel is drawn — and why a vague brief costs you more than a detailed one.

How To Brief A Web Design Project

Most website projects run late for the same reason: the brief was thin. Not wrong, just thin. A designer fills the gaps with assumptions, you review the result, and half the feedback is really the brief arriving late.

Start with the job, not the look

Before showing anyone a site you admire, write one sentence: what should a visitor do on this website? Book a call, request a quote, place an order, download a price list. Everything else — layout, colour, wording — is in service of that one action.

Bring the five things

  • The action. The one thing above.
  • The audience. Who they are and what they already know about you.
  • The proof. Numbers, clients, certifications, guarantees — whatever makes a stranger trust you.
  • The content you have. Real text and real photos, or an honest note that they don't exist yet.
  • The constraints. Deadline, budget range, brand rules, and anything that must not change.

Reference sites need a reason

"I like this one" is not useful. "I like how this one explains pricing before asking for contact details" is. Send three to five links and one line each on what specifically works.

Say what success looks like

Agree the measure at the start: enquiries per month, quote requests, phone calls, orders. It settles most design arguments later, because the question becomes "which version gets more enquiries" rather than "which version do we prefer".

A good brief is not a long document. It is a short one with no gaps in the important places.

If you would like a second pair of eyes on your brief before you commission anything, send it over — we will tell you what is missing.
