A site can score well in testing tools and still feel sluggish. Scores measure the load. Visitors measure the wait — and those are different experiences.
What people actually notice
Three moments. How long the page is blank. Whether text moves once it appears. Whether tapping a button does something immediately. Fix those three and a site feels fast even when the numbers are unremarkable.
The usual culprits
- Uncompressed images. Still the single biggest cause. A photo straight from a phone can be twenty times larger than it needs to be.
- Fonts loading late. Text appears, then jumps as the real font arrives.
- Too many third-party scripts. Every chat widget, tracker and embed is another request before the page settles.
- Shared hosting under load. Sometimes the server is simply busy.
The order to fix them
Compress and resize images first — it is the cheapest win and often the only one you need. Then reserve space for anything that loads late, so nothing shifts. Then audit your scripts and remove what you are not reading. Only then consider changing hosting.
Test on a phone on mobile data, not on your office WiFi. That is the experience most of your visitors are having.
